Playoff Tickets Strategery

March 25, 2011

What’s being a fan, if you can’t be suckered into horrible decisions…–Eugene, a friend of the Yin  Seeesters

This is not a post about how the Knicks seem to want to lose their way into a first-round date with the Bulls – there will be plenty of posts about playoff strategy.  Instead, this is about playoff strategery.

Yesterday, ticketmaster released the prices for playoffs tickets that go on sale today.  For Bulls’ fans, you’ll recall that last year, we didn’t make the playoffs until the waning days of the season so tickets went on sale almost a month later. Well, we don’t have that problem this year and boy-oh-boy, did the basic laws of economics rear their ugly head.  Below are the ticket prices for the first two rounds:

Round 1 Ticket Prices

  • 100 Level: $250 and $200
  • 200 Level: $175
  • 300 Level: $90 and $75
  • Standing Room: $40

Round 2 Ticket Prices

  • 100 Level: $275 and $225
  • 200 Level: $200
  • 300 Level: $120 and $100
  • Standing Room: $50
Ticketmaster added a little note: due to very limited inventory for the presale, the ticket limit will be enforced across all games, not per game. Orders that exceed the ticket limit will be automatically canceled and refunded.

Now, mind you readers, Joyce and I started a playoff savings account in January and we have a healthy chunk of money put away but these prices required some thinking.  Immediately, the braintrust (Yin Seeesters + Blee) went into playoff strategery mode:

Jocelyn: ok, so let’s figure out game plan
let’s be honest – if it goes to game 7, I want to be at the UC
Blee:
if it goes to game 7, Joyce will have a heart attack during starting lineup introductions
Joyce
: shhh.
no i won’t.
not until tip off, at the very least.
okay maybe i will during starting line ups
that’s fair.
Blee
: honestly, here’s a legit possibility
in the shitstorm of people trying to get tickets tomorrow, it’s completely possible that we could get shut out
Jocelyn
: one of you needs to camp out at UC
it’d be great for our blog
Blee
hahaha
Joyce
:  i may have a meltdown if we get shut out
Jocelyn
: joyce, the team’s counting on you
Joyce
: what.
blee
: bundle up
layers [Editor’s note: the forecast for Friday in Chicago calls for a high of 36 degrees]
Joyce
: brandon you’re closer
you go
okay SO
jocey you’re going to try and catch round two, games 5 and 7 [if it gets that far], yes?
Jocelyn
: yes
Blee
: I don’t think my bank account could handle $275 at the moment
$200 would work, but I find the 200 level at the UC quite sterile
$120 and $100 are definitely doable
Joyce
: $120 is for what seats? and $100 is for what seats?
Blee
: those are for the 300 level
Joyce
: yeeeeeeeeeeesh
Jocelyn
: so joyce
how about we do 300 level for game 5
and you guys do 300 level for game 2
for game 7, I’d like to do 100 level
but brandon, your thoughts on game 7?
Blee
: I’m in
Jocelyn
: so divide and conquer?
I can book game 7
Blee
: I could pay for one ticket at 100 level pricing, I just don’t know if I can do four up front
Jocelyn
: since my bank account won’t faint
Joyce
: i can do game 5
are we getting 4tickets for each game?
Jocelyn
: yes
might as well
Jocelyn
: brandon – gm2, joyce – gm5
Joyce
: for 300 level, are we trying to get $120 seats or $100 seats?
Jocelyn
: get best seats possible
Blee
: I’ll do $120
Jocelyn
: don’t quibble about which are which
Joyce
: okay
lulz.
quibble.
Blee
: this isn’t regular season
where I try and get the 9th row
and save $15 a ticket
Joyce
: hahahahaha
Blee
: this is the PLAYOFFS
Joyce
: this is crazy
Blee
: but I’m also saying, level expectations
there’s a reasonable chance that not all of us will get tickets
Joyce
: wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Blee
: we just should’ve gotten season tickets last year
then renewed for this season
Joyce
: lulz don’t say that
Blee
: screw my credit rating
Joyce
: jocey’s gonna be all like ‘I TOLD YOU’
Blee
: oh hey and she’s in the chat window, so she can
Joyce
: exactly
Jocelyn
: I TOLD YOU
Blee
: there it is
Joyce
: oh hey sorry i was trying to put away for savings and be, ya know, responsible
Jocelyn
: um, as my friend eugene recently posted on facebook
“What’s being a fan, if you can’t be suckered into horrible decisions…”

So it’s true – at 11:00 CST today, the Yin Seeesters and Blee will be camped out in front of their computers, frantically pressing refresh and then hoping that our bank accounts don’t scream in agony.  Here’s hoping that we live to tell the tale!
