You Will Bow Down to the Iron Sheik

March 5, 2011

So if you watched the Orlando Magic game last night, you undoubtedly witnessed the coming out party (31 minutes!) for the Turkish Delight aka Omer Asik. Due to Joakim Noah getting into foul trouble early, Omer came in and played a pretty damn good game of basketball. He held his ground against Dwight Howard, fought for rebounds, played smart defense and showed why the Bulls front office made the right decision in holding onto him during the trade talks.

The Big O doesn’t speak much to the media but I loved this quote from Sam Smith of the Bulls’ Blog:

“This is the best center in the league,” he acknowledged about Howard. “I just (tried) to take the rebound. The team needs me in that position. I try to do my job.

“He’s really big, big shoulders,” Asik said with his usual half laugh.

Oh, Omer. So precious with his hang-dog, sad puppy face. What I love most about him is that he’s got a great demeanor on the court. He gets called for some ridiculous fouls sometimes but he just keeps his head down and continues to play all out. Fits in perfectly with the rest of the Bulls players’ attitudes.

It’s great to see Thibs trusting him and playing him some minutes even though he’s still a rookie. His development has been apparent all year and it looks like he will only continue to get better and better.

All hail the Iron Sheik!
